What to Do When the Loss Prevention Alarms Sound

Investing in checkpoint tags for loss prevention is a wise thing for any company. Security tags help ensure that customers are paying for your products, not just walking out the door with them. Once you install surveillance antennas and place the security tags on all the merchandise you need to take  time to educate and train your staff on how they should deal with an attemped theft situation.

Staff should know how to respond when and if alarms start to go off. Here are some key things that you can do, or not do, when the merchandise trigger an alarm.

Do Not Accuse: The first thing that you should not do when an alarm turns on is accuse the person of stealing something. If you are not respectful and act aggressively, you will get the same kind of reaction from the customer, making things tense and difficult. It is wise to speak with the customers politely so that you can understand what might have happened.

You need to realize that not all the customers come to your shop to steal an item. Sometimes, the staff working at the billing counter can also make mistakes that can cause the problem. Try to understand the situation by listening to the customer and double checking the bill to see if there was a problem on your staff's end.

Do Not Take Their Bags: It is not a good thing to take the bag from the customer without their permission. Never act rudely with your customers, but instead ask for the reciept and for the customer to open their bag so you can double check their items. This helps share control of the situation and feels less aggressive.

Never Insult Them: After doing the necessary checks, tell them that they did not bill a particular item. Poitley check with them to see if they would like to purchase it. This way, the customer might buy the thing that they planned to steal without making any ruckus. They will also not do this ever again in your shop in the future.
