Serve The Customer

In the last edition of our Loss Prevention Newsletter, I talked about some ways on how to spot a shoplifter. Remember these are general things to look for but shoplifters come in all shapes and sizes.

In review, top 5 on how to spot a potential shoplifter

1.Look for something that seems out of place.

2.Someone is staying in the same location but refusing help.

3.A customer is avoiding staff and eye contact:

4.Large groups of customers.

5.Customers that are causing unnecessary distractions.

Now that you have spotted potential a shoplifter what do you do? Boldly throw them out of your store? Get a bat out from under the counter? Ask them what they stole last time? It is your store, you can do anything that you want (within the limits of the law) but I would NOT recommend doing any of the above. The best approach is to treat them like they are your best customer, pay attention to them, ask questions, make small talk, offer to show them the new whiz-bang item they are eyeing. If you have the personal, ask other employees to talk to any potential shoplifter too. Remember that the most effective, and least expensive way to reduce shoplifting is to SERVE THE CUSTOMER. Reinforce with your employees when they see, hear or meet a customer all other duties are put on hold. First, foremost and fanatically SERVE THE CUSTOMER. Doing this will not only increase sales (and profit), it will also reduce shoplifting. Chances are the thief will not take a risk if they are watched, they will go somewhere else. Also if you have an intercom in your store come up with a code "Mr. Clyde to isle four please" "Code A in the pet area" something to alert both the potential shoplifter and other employees that something is questionable.Shark Tag

It is imperative that your store has a written policy on dealing with shoplifters or potential shoplifters. I will delve into this subject in a future edition. If you do not have a written policy start composing one, ask employees and other store owners for their input. I would love to hear from you on how you deminstarte loss prevention.

Product highlight:

Shark Tag: Apparel Security Tag -The Shark Tag® is very effective in preventing customers from purchasing, using and returning merchandise for a full refund. The Shark Tag attaches to the garment with a pin in a visible area — the bright red color is attention-getting and signifies that the merchandise is being secured.
